Yikpa-Au Village

It’s been a while since I put something on this blog. A lot of things have happened since last time I wrote on here. There were X-mas, New Year and other end-of-the-year celebrations. And then it was the African Cup of Nations 2008 from January 20th to Februray 10th 2008. It was good to watch the CAN again after 5 years without watching it. It was really fun! I thought the final was goig to be between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire but to my surprise it was Egypt-Cameroun at the end. Cote d’Ivoire surprised me with their performance at the semi finals loosing to Egypt 1-4. They have had such good games since the beginning of the tournament and they have so many terrific players, but I don’t know what happenned to them. So Egypt won the Cup beating Cameroun for the second time in the tournament. So Egypt has now won 6 CAN since the CAN was created. Well done Egypt, I think they really were the best team of the tournament and they deserved to win it.
Togo did not qualify for the tournament, so I didn’t get to watch Emmanuel Adebayor play at the CAN but I’ve watching him play in England Premiership for Arsenal FC. Man he’s so good now. He’s the top scorer of the premier league so far with 19 goals. Ouao!
Anyway thought I needed to put something on here so I did till next time.

Lucky Dube the great South African reggae man has been murdered by car thieves in the streets of Jahannesburg yesterday. Africa and the the world has just lost not only a great musician but a great man. He always sung about social issues in his country and in Africa. He lived without alcohool or drugs contrary to a lot of rastas. He had been known all over the world. He’s now gone at the age of 43 because of crimes in big cities in south Africa. Can you believe that the rate of crimes in South Africa is 6 times the USA’s???
May Lucky Dube rest in peace! We will never forget him.

The electoral commission of Togo (dominated by RPT members and the president of the comission is from RPT as well) has proclaimed late last night the RPT winner of the congressional elections that took place last sunday October 14th, 2007 in Togo.
Now that I think back about how the actual president came to power in 2005 after his father died on the plane taking him to France for treatment, and how they came back quickly to Togo forbade the airplane that the president of the Assembly (who according to the constitution was supposed to become the interim president) was on to land in Lome and how they made the late dictator’s son president killing more than 500 people according to UN, I ask myself why in the world did I get optimistic about the outcome of last sunday’s election.
They said they won the elections again and it outrages me when western media like RFI and others are saying that this shows that the RPT is the premier political party in Togo, well-established blah blah blah… It seems to me like they don’t know anything about Togo and that they think that a people oppressed by one group of people (RPT) and one man (Eyadema) for 40 years and after the death of whom, his son was put in power by the military (and a fake election), a people who can’t find enough to eat, is so dumb that it would still vote for the RPT (forever and ever).
In congressional elections in the 90’s, it was the CAR of Yawovi Agboyibo that won 36 seats more that the RPT of Eyadema and another opposition party that won 7 seats and then the government had to kill some elected congressmen of CAR and corrupt some opposition leader like Edem Kodjo to get the majority at the National Assembly. And nothing has changed since then if not that more people were killed and the population is hungrier. So saying that the RPT really won these elections is just outrageous to me.
These elections came after long rounds of negotiations and what not and the EU, the Francophonie, and other organizations were involved in the election organization process and that made people believe that maybe something will happen this time and that explains the more than 80 % participation, but what are elections good for in Togo when you know that your votes will not count for anything and that the results will not reflect the elections or what people voted for, when the wrong result will always be given? The proof they truncated the results, according to the results they gave yesterday the participation was 95% and today they are saying it was 85%. We don’t need elections in Togo any more. Togo really seems to me like a God forsaken country.

Le mois prochain sont prevues des elections legislatives au Togo. Telles que les conditions ont ete decrites dans les medias togolais c’est comme si l’organisation est un peu mieux que certaines elections precedentes. Et aussi des observateurs sont promis par l’UE. alors nous esperons que quelque chose pourra sortir de ces elections tant attendues. Attendons de voir!!!!!

La coupe du monde des moins de 17 ans qui se deroule actuellement en Coree du Sud n’a pas totalement souri au jeunes Togolais qui y participaient. Lors de leur premier match contre le Costa-Rica les jeunes Togolais ont impressionne en premiere mi-temps en inscrivant un joli but mais se sont sont fait rattrappe en seconde mi-temps en encaissant un but. score final 1-1. Leur deuxieme match a ete sans buts malgre le jeu flamboyant des jeunes Togolais. Le troisieme et dernier match a vu les Togolais perdre 2 buts contre 1 apres avoir inscrit en premiere mi-temps un but d’anthologie. C’etait le meme scenario a la coupe du monde senior en 2006 ou le Togo menait la Coree du sud par 1 but a zero quand Abalo Dosseh le capitaine Togolais a pris un carton rouge et le match a bascule en faveur des Sud Coreens. Les jeunes Togolais ont fait la meme chose seul difference: le joueur Togolais a pris deux cartons jaunes cette fois ci. Dommage mais bon parcours pour ces jeunes Togolais qui ont impressionne par leur talents.

Les immigrés africains cherchent leur place aux Etats-Unis

WASHINGTON (AP) - “Pour les Blancs, nous sommes tous noirs, mais dès que vous parlez, certains Afro-américains se demandent ce que vous faites là”, explique Wanjiru Kamau, habitante de Washington d’origine nigériane… Les immigrés africains, estimés à plus d’un million, aux Etats-Unis s’efforcent de trouver leur place dans un pays où les relations entre Blancs et Noirs sont en constante évolution.

Certains sont diplômés de l’enseignement supérieur alors que d’autres sont illettrés, mais beaucoup veulent s’établir définitivement aux Etats-Unis et cherchent à s’intégrer dans la société américaine. “A l’exception de la peau, qui est juste une façade, les Africains et les Afro-américains ont très peu de choses en commun”, souligne Mme Kamau. “Nous devons prendre le temps d’écouter l’histoire de chacun.”

Selon les chiffres du recensement américain, le nombre d’immigrés africains aux Etats-Unis s’établissait à 881.000 en 2000. Mais en 2005, ce chiffre a atteint 1,2 million, précise Jim Wilson, de la Brookings Institution.

Depuis 1990, le nombre d’immigrés africains a plus que triplé dans des villes comme Atlanta, Seattle et Minneapolis, où ils représentent plus de 15% de la population noire. Ils se concentrent également à New York et dans l’agglomération de Washington: on en recense plus de 130.000 dans chacune de ces zones urbaines, selon M. Wilson.

Directrice de la Fondation pour les immigrés et réfugiés africains, Mme Kamau est en contact avec des nouveaux arrivants en situation difficile: réfugiés démunis de Somalie, du Soudan, du Liberia, de Sierra Leone et d’autres pays ravagés par la guerre.

Un grand nombre de réfugiés issus de zones rurales n’ont jamais utilisé d’appareils modernes auparavant et dans certains cas, ne savent ni lire ni écrire, note Mme Kamau. “Certains sont extrêmement frustrés, car la culture ici est très différente de ce qu’ils connaissent.”

A côté de cet afflux de réfugiés, on observe une vague d’immigrés hautement qualifiés. Selon les chiffres du recensement de 2000, il y a proportionnellement davantage de diplômés de l’enseignement supérieur parmi les immigrés africains (43%) que dans la population américaine dans son ensemble. Comparé aux Afro-américains, le revenu moyen des immigrés africains est plus élevé et leur taux de chômage plus bas.

Jacqueline Copeland-Carson, de l’université du Minnesota, est convaincue que les immigrés africains et les Afro-américains seront à même de surmonter des tensions, qu’elle attribue en partie au poids des préjugés. “Certains Africains jugent les Afro-américains violents, paresseux et inférieurs intellectuellement, alors qu’on enseigne aux Noirs américains que les Africains sont moins civilisés et moins capables”, explique-t-elle.

“En apprenant à se connaître dans les églises, les mosquées et les associations communautaires, les gens commenceront à se rendre compte qu’on leur a raconté des mensonges à propos de l’autre et qu’ils ont beaucoup de choses en commun.”

A Washington comme dans d’autres villes, les relations entre immigrés africains récents et Afro-américains sont marquées par des frictions occasionnelles. Certains Noirs américains ont ainsi rejeté une proposition visant à surnommer officiellement un quartier “Little Ethiopia”. Les organisations de défense des droits civiques évoquent un certain ressentiment dans les couches populaires afro-américaines qui considèrent les nouveaux venus comme une menace pour leurs emplois.

Les immigrés africains aux Etats-Unis viennent principalement, mais pas seulement, du Nigeria, d’Ethiopie et du Ghana. “Les conditions au pays font souvent qu’il est difficile d’y retourner”, explique Ike Udogu, un immigré nigérian, professeur à l’université Appalachian State, arrivé en Caroline du Nord il y a 36 ans. “Vous voulez travailler dans une société où votre vie n’est pas en danger.” AP

Ousmane Sembene je l’ai connu comme ecrivain pour l’avoir lu. Son hisoire m’avait toujours fascine. J’avais vu son roman “Les Bouts de Bois de Dieu” dans la petite bibliotheque de mon pere quand j’etais encore au CEG. Cela avait capte mon attention et je l’ai lu et aime. Par apres a l’ecole nous avions etudie beaucoup de ses ecrits et cela m’avait fascine de savoir qu’il etait un auto-didacte, quelqu’un qui s’etait enseigne lui meme par des lectures tout ce qu’il savait. Je ne savais pas que c’etait seulement une facette de lui et qu’il etait beaucoup plus connu comme l’un des precurseurs du cinema Africain. Ouao! Ousmane Sembene tout comme Senghor fait partie de ces grands personnages du Senegal. Il est decede le 9 juin passe a l’age de 84 ans. Paix a son ame et nous saluons son genie et son talent.

This morning while checking news about Togo as usual i found out there was bad news: The Togolese Sports minister Richard Attipoe, some members of FTF (Federation Togolaise de Football) and some Togolese football fans died in a helicopter crash in Sierra Leone while being transported on a 13 km ride from Freetown to the Lungi Airport. The two Ukrainians or Russian pilots allegedly jumped out after the helicopter went in flames. 21 people died and only one of the pilots survived. My sincere condoleances to the families involved in this terrible accident.

The other bad news is that the big construction instruments store in Lome called SONACOM went up in flames and the Togolese “firefighters” could not put out the fire with their rudimentary and old equipment and poor training. The fire was finally put out thanks to the help of the people of the neighborhood where the store is located.

The good news is that a Doctor from Benin Jérôme Fagla Médégan found a medicine that can cure this disease called in French “drepanocytose” a genetically transmitted disease that changes the red blood cells’ shape and causes atrocious pain in the joints and bones. This disease kills about 200 000 people in Africa every year. A french research institute granted the doctor a “brevet” and a French pharmaceutical company agreed to manufacture the medicine. Hopefully it won’t take too long for this to be on the market and not too expensive for people who have this disease (including a cousin of mine) and they could get relief.

Laura a develope une ONG appele “World Library Partnership (WLP)” a son retour aux USA pour aider a construire des bibliotheques dans les zones rurales dans les pays pauvres. Elle dirige aussi une boutique d’arts et autres de “commerce equitable” appelee “One World Market”. Les produits sont vendus a un prix afin de permettre aux artisans createurs de ces produits de beneficier d’un prix equitable pour leurs efforts.

Laura build a NGO called “World Library Partnership (WLP)” when she came back to US from Togo to help build libraries in rural areas in developing countries and especially in Africa. She also runs a fair trade store in Durham, NC called “One World Market”. where they sell crafts made by artisans from developing countries and making sure they get a fair price for their efforts. Laura was awarded the 2006 Certificate of Appreciation by her almer mater Oberlin College.
